Low expectation for an interesting evening at local Anglican church

This clipping from my local newspaper amused me. The last line says it all. Unfortunate, to say the least.

The Church and what it's not

Been thinking a lot about what the church is and what it isn't. Sometimes it is very convenient to put the blame on an institution and not have to personally deal with the relationship stuff. 

We can talk about 'it', but really it is 'us'. So easy to forget when we are having a bad time of things. Hopefully, the church (the people) is a place where we want to be because we enjoy the fellowship and friendship it offers - and where we can ultimately experience the presence of God.

It kind of also makes the phrase 'church-goer' well and truly redundant. And that's no bad thing, either! What a horrible reductionist term that is.

Blue Monday

This year "Blue Monday" - a date in January regarded as the most depressing day of the year - falls on 19 January...today. However The Optimists Society are looking to send "Cheer packages" to people like Jeremy Paxman, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, Radio 4 presenter John Humphrys, famously straight-faced comedian Jack Dee and the cast of the BBC soap EastEnders.

The Optimists Society are a happy group of people who say that positive action matters.

"Even in the tiniest things, whether it's raising money for a good cause, building a school in Africa or giving up your seat for someone on a bus."

Like that last one in London is gonna happen!

Nevertheless, as their name suggests, they are optimistic and I love that. And in even in the face of another predictable doom and gloom kind of Monday they have already put a smile on my face.

Strangely enough while looking at their Facebook page I saw at the time that they had a perfect 777 members. Almost sounds biblical, doesn't it.

Whatever you are doing, have a great week. And remember, God loves ya! Another reason to be cheerful!

Computer says, "No!"

Aaaaaaah! What a way to end the week. I have had nothing but trouble with my beloved Apple iBook recently and today it has refused to play ball for most of it. My old friend is no longer reliable and it breaks my heart to admit it. It's a terrible thing to grow old. Wallowing in my pit of despair I came across this cartoon today and it cheered me up for a few minutes.  Mind you, only for a few minutes!
