On the weekend I was reading that Chelsea and England Captain John Terry was allegedly negotiating a new £6m deal to stay at the club apparently because, in the words of L’Oreal, he’s worth it. The fact that fans are being forced away from the ticket stiles due to rising ticket prices seems not to enter into the equation. Strange world.
Today I came across a quote from Oswald Chambers classic: My Utmost for His Highest, which spoke volumes to me: “The test of a saint is not success, but faithfulness in human life as it actually is.”
There is probably no greater test in life than our attitude to money. In our culture it seems to be a measure of our personal worth. It appears to define who we are and whether we are worth knowing or not.
Last weekend I was speaking to a friend about a new local restaurant and its amazing refrigerated cheese room. Their response was cool (no pun intended) as they weren’t aware if it. Besides that, they didn’t get out much because they had been skint for the last few years.
I was taken back by their disclosed candour. Sadly, I know others who will live in the pretense of having disposable who would have gone along with the conversation to appease me. I am truly glad this friend didn’t. Not that I am loaded myself.
In God’s world, money is a devalued currency. It’s worth the square root of nothing, nil, zilch. It lacks the power to win God as a friend or give us an identity in Him. It only reveals what is hidden – our character. But don’t just take my word for it:
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with very much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:10-11).
Of course, what Jesus is talking about here is our attitude. Let’s be honest, our view of money can be selfish to say the least, which is why we need to keep a healthy view that is peppered with generous portions of humility. Learn that and we may just graduate to the next level in our spiritual development.
